Issues and Challenges of Implementing Dying in Place in Hong Kong: The Role of Geriatrician and 10 years of Experience Sharing
Abstract:

With the ageing of the population we witnessed an increasing number of deaths in most ageing societies. Hong Kong stands no exception to this trend. There has been rising interest in understanding about how the society could provide better care for older people during ‘death and dying’. International research and practice have suggested that offering Dying in Place as a choice to those with advanced illnesses would improve the overall quality of death for older people with Advanced Life Limiting Conditions. A research commissioned by the Hong Kong SAR Government Food and Health Bureau in 2015 has found that some 30% of Hong Kong people would prefer ‘Dying in Place’ instead of in Hospital as a choice if they have a known terminal condition. Furthermore, researches have demonstrated that older people residing in Long Term Care Facilities have higher chances of death than comparable age groups in the community related to the higher incidence of chronic illnesses and neurodegenerative conditions in Nursing Homes. The presentation will present the international development of End of Life Care and how it could be applied to Hong Kong. The presentation will also highlight the key developments in Hong Kong in the past 10 years to overcome the various hurdles of enabling Dying in Place in Hong Kong.
